As we approach the 2nd anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it’s refreshing to share a good news story of the success of the latest batch of Ukrainian cadets to graduate from the joint programme at the Lithuanian Maritime Academy and Kherson State Maritime Academy. Of the students supported by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, 15 students today celebrated receiving their certificates and are looking forward to pursuing their maritime careers.

The project, a joint venture between the two maritime academies, the Marine Transport Workers’ Union of Ukraine (MTWTU) and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust (ITFST), aims to provide opportunities for the new generation of Ukrainian seafarers whilst maintaining their position in the labour market. It was also an opportunity to meet the new group of ten 1st year cadets sponsored by the Trust.

“Today’s Ukrainian alumni with two diplomas from Lithuania and Ukraine are a unique example of a joint work and dedication shown by partners. ITF Seafarers’ Trust and MTWTU made all possible for Ukrainian cadets to be hosted in safety and comfort and they utilized this exceptional opportunity in full,” said Oleg Grygoriuk, Chairman of the MTWTU.

‘It is an honour to participate in this milestone event at the beginning of these young peoples’ careers. They have studied hard under challenging circumstances and we wish them the brightest of futures,’ added Katie Higginbottom, Head of the ITFST.

The students were also warmly congratulated by Arvydas Vaitkus, the mayor of Klaipeda, and Martin Bankov Training & Development Manager of Marlow Navigation who also sponsor a cohort of Ukrainian cadets.
