Maritime workers in Iraq receive protection from Covid-19

Filter and disposable masks, hand sanitisers and surface cleaners have been distributed to maritime workers in Iraq thanks to the ITF Seafarers’ Trust.

The Seafarers’ Trust Covid-19 emergency fund, awarded to the Iraq National Coordinating Committee, NCC, has been used to help distribute protective personal equipment, PPE, for maritime workers in the Port of Basra.

“With support from the ITF Arab World office we have made very good use of this grant. We are helping to prevent the infection of seafarers and their families and as we mark the Day of the Seafarer, we are also delivering a vital message to seafarers that we care and we will do all we can to protect them. On behalf of the five unions representing the NCC and the workers in the Port of Basra we would like to extend our thanks to all at the ITF and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust” said Ali Kuzair, President of the National Coordinating Committee.

Katie Higginbottom, Head of ITF Seafarers’ Trust said “We are proud to support Iraq unions in the NCCs to confront the pandemic of COVID-19. This support is possible because of a well organised NCC – which covers port workers, oil and gas workers and merchant seafarers – that is clear about its aims of promoting safety of essential workers”
