IMO World Maritime Day theme announced

“Shipping: indispensable to the world” selected as World Maritime Day theme for 2016

The Seafarers’ Trust welcomes the recent unveiling of the 2016 World Maritime Day theme. As Secretary-General of the IMO, Koji Sekimizu, commented:

“Today, around 90% of world trade is carried by the international shipping industry. Without shipping the import and export of goods on the scale necessary to sustain the modern world would not be possible. And seaborne trade continues to expand, bringing benefits for consumers across the world through competitive freight costs. Yet the fact remains that most of the world’s population is not aware of the vital role shipping plays in their everyday lives.”

World Maritime Day, due to be held September 22, 2016, celebrates the international maritime industry’s contribution towards the world’s economy, especially in shipping. The day focuses on shipping safety, security and the environment.

The welfare and wellbeing aspect of World Maritime Day should not be under-emphasised itself. ThroughPorts of Call, Horizons, Beyond the Blue and SeaChange, Trust strategy in the years to come will focus not only on improving seafarers’ wellbeing and access to welfare services, but also helping to promote the sector more generally, highlighting good employment practice and working towards inclusive working environments.
