3 Years Core Funding for SeafarerHelp

£450,000 has been awarded to ISWAN to fund SeafarerHelp, the 24/7 hotline available to seafarers.

The purpose of the three year grant is not only to help ISWAN increase the number of new cases it receives each year, but also to assist in the development of a structured training & professional development programme for SeafarerHelp staff.  ISWAN also wish to undertake feasibility study for new case handling software as well as working on external communication strategy through the development of a new website.

The helpline has substantially increased the number of cases, year on year, since 2011. The training & professional development programme will help implement new case handling guidelines so that responders have a clearer idea about the processses and procedures that need to be implemented. From our own anecdotal evidence, we refer many cases a day to SeafarerHelp for assistance. It is therefore imperative that welfare providors remain confident about the advice offered to seafarers in need. ISWAN are also looking to develop an app alongside the website redevelopment so that we can begin to take advantage of the large proportion of seafarers who now possess smart phones and other mobile devices.
